The ArcInfo coverage contains the original land subdivision boundaries for Ohio. Ohio has had a long and varied history of its land subdivisions that has led to the use of several subdivision strategies being applied. In general, these different schemes are composed of the Public Land Surveying System (PLSS) subdivisions and the irregular land subdivisions. The PLSS subdivisions contain townships, ranges, and sections. They are found in the following major land subdivisions: Old Seven Ranges, Between the Miamis (parts of which are known as the Symmes Purchase), Congress Lands East of Scioto River, Congress Lands North of Old Seven Ranges, Congress Lands West of Miami River, North and East of the First Principal Meridian, South and East of the First Principal Meridian, and the Michigan Meridian Survey. The irregular subdivisions include the Virginia Military District, the Ohio Company Purchase, the U.S. Military District, the Connecticut Western Reserve, the Twelve-Mile Square Reservation, the Two-Mile Square Reservation, the Refugee Lands, the French Grants, and the Donation Tract.
<purpose>This coverage was originally created for the accurate location of the oil & gas wells in the state of Ohio. </purpose>

<procdesc>The process that we used involved digitizing the irregular land-subdivision lines from the county engineer tax maps. In some cases, the irregular land-subdivision lines were not reliable or could not be read from the tax maps. In those cases, we used alternative sources for the irregular land subdivisions. These sources included Ohio Fuel Gas township-well-spot maps, Ohio Division of Geological Survey county base maps, county plat books, Pure Oil Company township well-spot maps, larger scale subdivisions from Sherman (1925), Sherman's (1922) map (used as a secondary source of Virginia Military District lots), and the Quaker State Oil Company base maps (used especially as a tertiary source for the Virginia Military District lots). We would do a digitizer setup of a township tax map to the digital base map assembled from the DLG's. If the misclosure between the township map and the digital base map was greater than 50 feet, then a digitizer setup was performed on a smaller area of the tax map. Once an acceptable digitizer setup was established, the operator digitized the irregular land-subdivision lines into the graphics file.</procdesc>

<complete>The original land subdivison data set is approximately 90% complete, based upon the following discussion. There is a large amount of uncertainty concerning the Virginia Military District lots, particularly in Ross, Pike, Scioto, and Adams Counties. There is some uncertainty concerning the Connecticut Western Reserve lots, especially in Huron and Erie Counties, and in Youngstown, Mahoning County. The original land subdivisions of Ohio data set is missing the following subdivisions: 1) the Turnpike lots that run from Perrysburg, Wood County, to Bellevue, Sandusky County; 2) the subdivisions for Perrysburg, Wood County; 3) the Two-Mile Square subdivisions; 4) the Zane Tracts in Lancaster and Zanesville; 5) the Indian Grants to Richardsville (Sections 7 and 8, Township 3 South, Range 1, South and East of the First Principal Meridian) and Logan (Sections 25, 26, 35, 36, Township 4 South, Range 5, South and East of the First Principal Meridian). The subdivisions in York and Dover Townships, Athens County, in the Ohio Company Purchase are possibly incorrect. The subdivisions in those two civil townships, which were obtained from the Athens County engineer tax maps, do not match those shown in Plate 10 of Sherman (1925). Some of the irregular subdivisions in the Ohio Company Purchase are bounded by regular section lines. According to Sherman (1925) "arbitrary section lines are often drawn on the maps by taxing officials and others for purposes of administration."</complete>

<horizpar>For the U.S. Geological Survey digital line graph (DLG) data, an assumption is made that the section corners and subdivision boundaries meet the National Map Accuracy Standards for 1:24,000-scale data. For the 1:24,000-scale DLG data, this corresponds to ± 40 feet. Although the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) does not claim legal responsibility for the accuracy of the PLSS data, it was discovered that considerable effort was made to recover the PLSS section corners for Ohio. According to the specifications used to create the topographic maps (U.S. Geological Survey, 1980), all efforts must be made to recover the PLSS section corners so that the PLSS lines can be represented accurately. Examination of the original source materials stored at the USGS offices in Rolla, Missouri, revealed that the surveyors collected, in the field, the locations of the original section corners. The surveyors used copies of the original survey plats from 1786 to 1820 to survey and recover the section corners. These plat copies came from the National Archives in Washington, D.C. This effort to accurately recover and represent the section corners gave the Division confidence that this map series would meet the needs of the oil and gas industry to locate wells throughout the state of Ohio.
For the irregular land subdivisions, it is difficult to estimate the accuracy of the subdivision boundaries. It is estimated that the accuracy of the subdivision boundaries to be ± 100 feet.</horizpar>
